How Much Compensation Does WestJet Pay?
WestJet declares itself a large carrier under APPR. The minimum payment is $400 for an arrival delay of 3 to under 6 hours, $700 for 6 to under 9 hours, and $1,000 for 9 hours or more.
Amounts apply per passenger and are based on arrival at the final destination on the original ticket. Compare the rules in our Canada flight delay compensation guide.
Which WestJet Flights Are Covered?
APPR applies to WestJet-operated flights, including WestJet Encore services covered by the WestJet Group. For a codeshare operated by another airline, the operating carrier is generally responsible for the disruption.
WestJet's current tariff defines "WestJet" as either WestJet or WestJet Encore, whichever operated the flight, and declares the carrier large for APPR purposes. TripFix checks the operating-carrier details before preparing the claim brief.
Qualifying situations can include:
- Crew, scheduling, or operational problems fully within WestJet's control and not required for safety
- A qualifying first-flight delay that causes a missed connection and a 3+ hour late final arrival
- A qualifying cancellation followed by a replacement itinerary that arrives 3+ hours late
Mechanical issues require closer review because some are treated as safety-related and do not qualify for cash compensation.
When WestJet Compensation Does Not Apply
- Weather or unsafe flying conditions
- Air-traffic control decisions or airport system issues
- Security incidents, medical emergencies, labour disruptions, or hidden manufacturing defects
- Disruptions within airline control but required for safety
- You arrived less than three hours late
- You were notified more than 14 days before departure
Assistance is separate from compensation. For disruptions within WestJet's control, including for safety, reasonable meals, communication, and overnight accommodation may apply after the APPR notice and wait-time thresholds are met. Weather generally does not create that assistance obligation.
How the WestJet Claim Process Works
WestJet accepts compensation claims through its flight delay and cancellation claim form. The form becomes available 72 hours after arrival or the interruption.
- Enter the six-letter WestJet reservation code exactly as it appears on the booking
- Use the passenger's matching first name, last name, and date of birth
- Save a screenshot before submitting; WestJet warns that a completed claim cannot later be retrieved
- Submit meals, hotel, transportation, and communication costs through WestJet's separate expense-reimbursement form with itemized receipts
WestJet says a response should arrive within 30 days and approved compensation is offered electronically. For the evidence to collect first, follow the complete flight delay compensation claim process.
How TripFix Intake Works
Start your claim with TripFix by telling Goose what happened and uploading your booking confirmation or itinerary. Goose checks available WestJet flight records, confirms whether WestJet or WestJet Encore operated the flight, gathers the claim facts, and provides a preliminary estimate. If you already submitted WestJet's form, upload the screenshot and response so they can be included in the claim brief prepared for TripFix's human review.
Not Sure If You Qualify?
Start with TripFix by telling Goose what happened and uploading your booking confirmation or itinerary. Goose checks available flight records and prepares a claim brief for you to review. Starting and assessment are free; if your claim proceeds, there is no fee unless compensation is recovered.
